It has to do with Asian scripts.

There is a command on the Tools menu that says "Fix Broken Text." What does
it do?

Jim

Nothing you're likely to need. :-)

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260162 --

~~~~~~~~~
When you open a Word document that was created using an earlier
Eastern European version of Microsoft Word, the text of the document
may appear as square boxes or other incorrect characters when you open
the document in the English (U.S.) version of Microsoft Word.
This problem is caused by font-mapping and character-mapping problems.
For example, this problem can occur when you create a document by
using a font that is not installed on your computer.
To correct these problems, Microsoft provides a Word Font Repair Macro
that converts the fonts in the document (or the selected text) to
Arial.
This is rather a weak reply. This command is on the standard menus but has
absolutely NO information about it in the provided Help.
It is a weak reply (and actually an incorrect answer, I now see) because
this command is on the standard menus but has absolutely NO information
about it in the provided Help. OTOH, presumably you can google this just as
easily as I can.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q="fix+broken+text"&aq=f&oq= turns up
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2272623.php, which explains that it
actually has to do with Eastern European languages. See also
The point of my reply was to convey the information (as Jay Freedman did in
one of the replies that shows up in Google) that it's not something you're
likely to need.
