What does "Application Preference" mean as far as AA/AF settings is concerned?

Been following some of the discussions in this NG regarding whether AA
& AF should be enabled/disabled (to improve gameplay). I just went to
see if mine was ON and it says "Application Preference". I am
assuming it mean that it lets the game decide but I do I know if the
game turns it ON or not (and to what level 2X 4X etc) ???

Should I just remove this generic setting and try my own combo
(starting with AA 4X and AF 4X maybe?). I play mainly racing games
and my card is a 9500 Pro.

Well a number of games have their own antialiasing settings. But many
have not, I haven't seen it in many racegames and if you don't find it
in options, you probably are not using it during gaming.

Anisotropisch Filtering is great in racegames are you can see the road
before you in FULL quality.

AA, ... that doesn't needs an introduction :)
