what does an X in an image box mean?

I am having quite a few problems with a PP pres that is about 140 slides
long. The main one is that I am getting an "X" in an image box where there
used to be an image. This file right now is on a network drive that I and my
boss can get to. Thursday it seemed that the file could be opened up with no
problem on a laptop that was hooked up to an Infocus machine. Today my boss
opened the file up on her computer which is connected to the network and the
"X" appeared on some slides that I inserted images to. I opened the file up
on my computer and it also had "x" on those images. I know it must be some
type of linking problem but why would it give me the problem. My IT
department said they are not having any troubles with the network.

What else can I do?

Also, when placing an image in PP I thought it was embeded and goes with the
document, so why have the problems?

This should help. RED X instead of graphics

Unless you go out of your way to force the image to link, then it IS embedded.
That's not likely the problem.

Networks can be, though. Try copying the PPT file from the network drive to
your local computer using Windows Explorer; then open the local copy of the
file in PowerPoint.
