What do I need to connect two machines wirelessly?

First, let me apologize for being ignorant. I did try to find some
information online, but must not have been looking in the right places.

Basically, I want to set up a simple, wireless peer-to-peer network so
my son and I can share files and printers. We're not going to share
an Internet connection or anything else. I just want to share printers
and send files back and forth. Speed isn't a major concern. I'm
more concerned about keeping the spending to a minimum and I don't
need much in the way of bells and whistles.

Anyway, I have XP Pro and my son has XP Home and the machines are in
the same room. What equipment do I need to network these two computers
for simple file sharing?

Get two wireless nics and set them for adhoc. Buying a Hub and two
network cables will be cheaper though.

Thanks for answering my question.

Just to make sure I understand, I can get just the two cards and I
wouldn't need a router or hub or whatever and I'll be able to share
files and printers between the two machines. Is that right?

Also, can I assume that there'll be instructions somewhere that
describe how to set the cards for "adhoc?"

Finally, do you have any thoughts or suggestions about where or which
cards to buy?

Yes, all you need is two wireless clients to setup an AD-HOC network between
your two computers. The easiest way to do this is to purchase two USB Client
adapters, since you wont have to open your system and play around with that.

Purchase two of something like http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=334
for good speed and easy setup. AD-HOC instructions are not really clear from
manufacturers as they would rather have you also buy one of thier routers,
but here is a good article on how to setup an AD-HOC network,

If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
