When I updated from windows xp my "my music" folder seemed to be the only one
that had security permissions preventing me from accessing the folder..I have
permission now but all my music is gone, but my disc space is still the same
as if I had all the music still. What do I do?

Music is no longer stored under %userprofile%\My Documents\My Music\. Your
{documents, music, videos} are now moved to %userprofile%\{Documents, Music,
Videos} instead of being inside My Documents folder.

I'm sorry but don't you have a backup? Beta software should only be put on
a test system, not on a production or primary use computer. Important data
should always be backed up. Data loss can happen anytime.

Try some of the data recovery software. Do a google search for it.

And you don't have it backed up anywhere? And you installed a BETA OS on
your production PC?

Hmmm....

Sorry, don't mean to seem aloof... don't have an answer for you. Next time,
have a backup and don't install a BETA OS on a production PC. Even if this
is a secondary PC, if it had 50GB's of data that you don't have elsewhere,
dude, it IS a production PC. Live and learn.

Before you give up, there are maybe a couple of places you might look, but I
have no idea if they would be there.

The first is Windows.old, but if you did a search, you should have found
them there, unless they were compressed or something. The second is the
path below. Enter it where you want and go to the folder. Once there you
might look for your music. This folder does not show up in any searches, so
something might be hiding. Change the information in the path to fit your
situation and then copy and paste.

C:\Users\You\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Virtualized

It might make a difference about where the music is, depending on if it was
covered under DRM or just ripped from a CD--don't know for sure. Like you
probably, I can't believe the install would just wipe it out without backing
it up somewhere. I have an extra hard drive, maybe I will install XP and
then upgrade to see if I can find some music, but mine will not have any DRM
associated with it.

OK, I just finished installing Xp and then 5728 Twice, once for each way you
could have updated.

If you "Upgraded" from within XP, which is the only way to upgrade, you
files would be in the C:\Users\YourUser\Music folder.

If you did a "Custom (advanced)" install, your files would have been moved
to C:\Windows.old\documents and Settings\Your User\My Documents\My Music

This is assuming you had the files in your My Documents\My Music folder.

I can only think of 3 possibilities why they might not be there.

First, you had a failed install attempt so when you tried again, the
original files were overwritten.
Secondly, if you changed user names (or passwords), they may be is a
different area (a total guess;)).
Lastly, the DRM on the files caused them to be handled in a different manner
(another guess).

All I might suggest, and you have probably already done this, is to run
Windows Explorer in administrator mode to search for the file extensions.
