What causes event log corruption?

Over the years, I've had a few systems end up with corrupted event logs. Is
there anything I can do to prevent this from occuring? Since the event logs
are a type of database, are there proactive measures that I should take
periodically on my systems that make heavy use of the event log?

Thanks for any help,
