What causes automatically inserted lines

I have been creating and adding to a MS Word document with MS Office 2007 in
Word 2003 compatibility mode and only recently Word started to insert an
across-the-page demarkation line sproadically. I can't figure out what is
causing this nor how to elimiate it. I can't ever delete it from the page
onceit gets in there. Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.
