What are these files & can I delete them?

C

Click

If I click on the cleanup utility & run it & it tells me that I have 10 MB
of temp files that can be deleted. I say yes so they should now all be
gone. I run it again & it says that I have 0 files that can be deleted.
Even though it says that the quantity is now zero I click view files & lots
of files with strange names '4buhgv81' come up . If I select all of these
files & click properties it tells me that they are 68MB in size. What are
these files & can I delete them? Why doesn't the cleanup utility show them
in the total & why didn't it clear them out the first time around?

Yes, you can delete these. Yes, you will get a window warning
you that they are System Files. Ignore and click Yes to all. You
may not be able to delete any Index.dat files.
Another way to get rid of this clutter: Open Internet
Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/General tab/click Delete
Cookies/Click Delete Files/click Clear History. When the Delete Files
window pos up, check Delete all online content, if you so desire.
Unless you have some reason for keeping any of this. Some sites use Cookies to
save your name, password, etc. so you don't have to type the information
every time you visit. I would rather type it in than have all that junk
cluttering up my hard drive.
If you want, try this: Open IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced
tab/scroll down to the bottom/check: Empty Temporary Internet Files
folder when browser is closed/click Apply/OK. Entirely up to you,
but if you want to be rid of this, it is done automatically.
Also: Start IE/Tools/Internet Options/General tab/Days to keep
pages in history: 0/Apply/OK.
Hope this helps. Let us know.

Cookies/Click Delete Files/click Clear History. ...Content
tab/Clear SSL State. Unless you have some reason for keeping any of this.

Actually there are seven locations. I could only find the seventh
location when I booted up in Safe Mode. I don't remember the seventh
location at this time.
Look here:
C:\Documents and Settings\"Your Name Here"\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files.
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.
C:\Documents and Settings\Local Service\Local Settings\ Temporary Internet
Files.
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\ Temporary Internet
Files.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary
Internet Files\Content.IE5
Another file that you may want to delete the contents of, but not
the file itself, is Prefetch. C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch. You can safely
remove these files; any files that are needed will be created again
automatically. no > You might want to do a Search (click the Sherlock
Holmes looking magnifying glass while in Windows Explorer) for *.chk, *.tmp
and *.bak files. .chk files are saved file fragments from CheckDisk, in my
opinion, probably unusable. .tmp files are temporary files. bak. files are
backup files.
Take a look here:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~mp2004/
DiskCleaner. I use this myself. I use it to automatically delete or empty
all kinds of stuff.
Or here:
http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm
EasyClean. I use this one too. Comes in Albanian also. :) I
use it to find and delete Unecessary files. And to clean out my Registry. Be
careful if you use this one. The second day with XP, I rendered Help useless
by deleting the wrong Registry entries. If I had read all the instructions.
;-) But fixed it and set it up so I won't do that again. When attempting to
delete TIF Content IE5, Windows tries to scare you off with a window that pops
up. Says something like, "Are you sure you want to delete, this is a system
file?" Or some such.
Yes to all!
Hope this helps. Let us know.
