What are the gotchas?

to "replace with a single space character" after entering the [ ]{2,} in the
search field... what is that character? Thank you!

I can't find the original post, even on Google Groups, but I'll try to guess
what you're asking about. When you're using a wildcard search for [ ]{2,} to
replace all occurrences of two or more spaces with one space, put the cursor
in the Replace With box of the dialog and press the spacebar once. That puts
a single space character in the box, and that will be the result of each
replacement.

There is in fact a new gotcha, to which the wildcard replacement is the
workaround. In Word 2007 Service Pack 2 that was recently released, there's
a new bug. If an inline graphic has a space character both before and after
it, and you do an ordinary (non-wildcard) replacement of two spaces with one
space, the graphic will be removed. (This is also true if the graphic is
surrounded by paragraph marks and the search term is ^p^p, or if it's
surrounded by tab characters and the search term is ^t^t, or several other
situations.) Using the equivalent wildcard replacements does not have this
bug.
