What are the *default* passwords for Windows2000/NT administrators?

Hi

A client of mine is re-installing his network.
I think they are using Windows2000 (or it might
be WinNT) - he has forgotten the default password
for the administrator! (He never changed it
when setting up - they are a tiny business)

He can log in as a user with administrator
rights but not as main administrator

- What are they the *default passwords* that
Microsoft supply for network administrators?

With thanks

You need to ask your client: There are no default passwords,
it's up to the installer to specifiy a password at install time.

Many installers use a blank password. Perhaps your client
did this too, or he entered his own name, or the company
name.

If he can log in as a user with admin rights then he can, of
course, reset the admin password!

When installing Win 2K you're asked to supply a password
for adminsitrator but default is blank

I'd advise him to change this if this is still the case
ASAP as viruses will attempt to infect PC's with simple
psswords for administrator accounts ( eg password, no
password at all, administrator ).

Greetings --

There is no default password. Both WinNT and Win2K ask the person
performing the installation to set the Administrator's password during
the installation. If none is set, the "default" password is blank.

Also, if he can log in as another user with administrator rights, he can
change the password for the user "administrator" (without knowing the current
one). Exactly how to do this depends somewhat on whether it is WinNT or
Win2k.

Actually not so easy apparently...

Here's what he says:

No, the answer is that by default if your operating system gets trashed and
you can't boot up, the default password for recovery console is disabled and
you'll never get in!!!

you have to go into registry while machine is still ok and change security
settings to allow no password when using recovery console. - i think that is
really stupid - it should be Enabled by default !!! I did use correct
password but it obviously got corrupted too. I also had 3 administrator
users - none of them worked!

anyway had to re-install!

Sounds to me like his entire system got corrupted...
