what are macros? how do i enable them?

every time i open word 2003 i get a message to say that 'the macros for this
project are disabled' i have followed the help instructions from word to
enable the macros but this has not solved the problem.
 
Word's macro security determines whether macros can be run. You need to set
it at medium which will give you a prompt when documents contain macros.
Also set the option to trust installed templates and add-ins.
