What are Groups for?

Do Organizational Units not obviate Groups?
What is the purpose of creating Groups, especially in relation to OUs

OUs cannot be used to assign security, and cannot be used as mailing lists -
that's what you use groups for.

A GPO by default is applied to everything in the OU. You can use groups so that the GPO is only applied to some of the objects in the OU if necessary. It just gives you some more flexibility in this case.
