What are grey Left and Right Brackets around sentence

J

John

Word 2003, Windows XP Professional

I suddenly had a pair of grey left [ and right ] brackets appear around a sentence.
I am not sure what they are and how to get rid of them.

Thank you for the feedback.

They are not the braces { } that appear in a field.

Probably bookmarks. You can turn off the display of them under
Tools>Options>View.

In Word 2003 I have noticed the same thing. I want to keep bookmarks
displayed. But sometimes something will "bookmark itself" and I have not
succeeded in figuring out why or how?

It was a bookmark - an ole-link.
It is also a mystery to me why this is
happening. I've never had a problem with
this before. I wonder if the last Microsoft
urgent update changed something?

Thanks again for your help.

Maybe you created a TOC? That'll put bookmarks on headings.
Cross references (say to numbered items) can also insert hidden bookmarks
for you without telling you...
There may be other things than I'm missing.

But the markers don't show up for hidden bookmarks; that's what's "hidden"
about them!
