What actually happens with included content

Linda

I need to understand the actual process that occurs when
using included pages in FrontPage 2002 and whether
something different occurs in FrontPage 2000.

Here's my situation.....

A web site has been developed and published using FrontPage
2002. The site has close to 300 pages, most of which
contain several included pages. There are no other
FrontPage extensions being used (I'm not even sure if
included pages is considered an extension). I have been
hired to regularly update one of the included pages and I
have FrontPage 2000.

Let's assume the included page I'm updating is called
BannerA.htm.

When the client updates BannerA.htm, she FTPs it into her
local web, makes the changes, and publishes it using
FrontPage 2002. She selects just that one file to publish.
The result is that all the pages on her site are updated to
reflect the new BannerA.htm file.

How are those 300 pages updated? Are all of the pages being
changed locally and then uploading? What exactly is happening?

Is it possible for me to accomplish an update to all of the
pages just by changing and uploading the BannerA.htm file
with Front Page 2000?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Include Page/Shared Border components work the same in both versions. As
long as the web site has the FP extensions, FTP should not be used.

When a Shared Border or FP Include page is saved, the content is written to
all files using that Shared Border/FP Include page when done within the FP
Client application.

No
FP Include pages are design time tools
You need to publish (or FTP in your case) all pages using them

For what you want to do check w/ your host on Server Side Includes (SSI) and using shtml pages
