Well, I went to Windows Update and was forced to download and install
WGA IV. This is getting to be like the Rocky movies.

True. A far cry from the original (out-of-the-)boxing experience

I'm sure there will be a hack out by tomorrow. I eagerly await it.

If you don't install it, you can't go to Windows Update to download
updates. It isn't offered as a choice anymore. You can, for now anyway,
use AU but who knows how long that will last.

Heh.

WGA asks to connect to the net every time your reboot.

Alias

MicroSypware. I'm waiting for the first Anti-Spyware maker that adds
WGA to its malware definitions for removal.

Yes, that's how I currently update - "notifications only via AU", and then
download manually the ones you want from Windows Catalogue.

Might not be possible forever, though, as you say.

The problem I am having is doing updates on a freshly installed
*legitimate* machine. I am forced to call Microsoft first before
doing updates. Before, I would handle acitivation last to 1) be able
to do it when it's convenient 2) make sure the machine is running fine
before having to call (might be other hardware issues going on, etc.)

What's "AU"?

Oh, wait "Automatic Updates". Gotcha.

Automatic Update.

A friend of mine just used it with a reinstall and no WGA. For that
privilege, you have to go to the Windows Update web site.

AU for notifications only
[Right-click "My Computer" > Properties > Automatic Updates]

Then download your updates from
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8973

and then put them on a disk or cd somewhere, for the next time you need them
