I have found a small tool called DTemp, monitoring the disk temperature:
http://private.peterlink.ru/tochinov/

It shows, that my new 80 GB Western Digital HDD has about 43C. I have tried
to copy a large file (1GB) from one partition to another on this disk, which
took a few minutes. The temperature rose to 47C. And the maximum operating
temperature is about 55C (I'm not sure), so it shouldn't be a problem...
The disk is installed in the place of the damaged Maxtor.
