Weird XP problems after total system reboot/reinstall

A few days ago my friend bought his new PC and decided to make some
partitions on it. For some reason he deleted all the programs that were on
the PC, including Windows XP itself, unsing the CD he got from Dell, and then
he made the partitions. He then reinstalled Windows XP. After that he has
been getting some strange stuff. For example when he click the Turn Off
button he can only see the 'Turn Off' and 'Restart buttons', the 'Stand by
button' is see through and cannot be clicked. Also he cant see some of the
stuff in his control pannel, for example he cant change the screens
resolution. This may be a built in restriction, because of the monitor he
has, but it still should allow him to change it to smaller or bigger
resolutuion. Also the CD's with the drivers that he got from Dell are not
read in, when he insterts them nothing happenes. What is even stranger, when
he puts in another program cd or a music cd it works and reads it in. I came
accross some weird stuff, but not something like this. If more details is
required, about the PC or problems itself, please let me know. Any help
greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The missing standby option is related to the lack of ability to change the
resolution. He has not installed all the drivers necessary for normal
operation. Instead of the autorun feature, he should insert the CD and
manually explore it and install the necessary drivers.

Ok kool. Thx alot. Well one thing my friend did when he made the partitions,
is he deleted a 3GB partition, which had 2.2GB stuff inside. I cant remember
where to go to use the Windows partitioner, but last time when I was there, I
also had this partition and it said 'backup'. What he is going to do now, is
to reinstall the whole of Windows again, to see whether he gets that partiion
back or not and to see if he can read in the cd's with the drivers on. Thank
you very much for your help. I thought that it was the drivers that were the
problem, but would have never thought it would be the case for the resolution
or the stand by button. Thx again Rick.

Hi,

That recovery partition may or may not be returned based on the type of
system recovery provided by the manufacturer. Many of them include all the
extra stuff needed here. Deleting it without copying it was a bad idea.
