Weird timing problem

New build.

Albatron KX18D ProII
AMD 2500+
Win98SE

Various audio skip problems boil down to this: the file "The Microsoft
Sound.wav" (and all other files, but this is well-known and clean)
plays correctly on mplayer and Winamp, but on MediaPlayer 9, it skips
- that is, it plays the file with short missing pieces so that it
finishes in less time than the file length. This same thing happens
when playing mp3 files and when playing Audio CS's in digital mode.

This same problem occurs in other AV software so deleting MediaPlayer
is not an option. Seems like some sort of internal clock problem, but
don't know where to look.

Any thoughts?

|this is a 'sound' problem,so I would reinstall the soundcard drivers

Winamp works fine. Surely it uses the same drivers.

Update your sound card drivers.

Try installing a separate sound card if you're currently using onboard
audio. It'll take the audio load off of your CPU and possibly stop the
skips. I had a similar problem and this fixed it.

Yes, using internal audio. If an AMD 2500 can't handle it, with
nothing else running, there's a serious problem with the chipset (and
the NVidia Force2 is supposed to be pretty good!). Note that this
same symptom shows up in Roxio previewing a video-only slide show for
DVD burning (not during the burning). The seconds-counter skips some
numbers and a 30-second show ends in less than 30 seconds.

Well so far the suggestion is to reinstall your sound drivers, but you have decided that, that is not the problem, you must then
know the problem and wish for us to guess right?

I'm sorry if I seem to be ignoring the suggestions, but the "stock"
answer from many tech support hotlines seems to be "reinstall the OS"
or the drivers, and while I understand why they do it, it has seldom
helped with my problems (but I usually do it anyway before going to
the next setp).

I have installed all new drivers for the chipset, including the audio
drivers with the latest from the NVidia site (dated mostly April and
May of 2003). There is no change.

Try disabling any programs or optional services that you have starting
automatically.
