Weird stuff in headers with auto insert

After an ubrupt exit, word now inserts some stuff that looks like coding in the headers and footers when you use the auto insert feature to insert dates or doc. names etc. I would rather not re-install as the user has lots of autotext and macros. Any suggestions?
 
I think you're just seeing field codes in place of field results. Press
Alt+F9 to toggle back and forth between them.
 
Is the "weird stuff" all caps text in braces { } ? It is showing the field
codes instead of the field results. Hit Alt-F9 to toggle on and off.
