Weird Shutdown Sequence

Hello,

Just recently my computer began acting odd during shutdown, not detrimental
or anything, just different than I was expecting. Anyway, I first noticed
it after my computer was having a hard time shutting down, you know, after
running a program that seems to be eating up all the memory and something,
and it gets painfully slow to shut down even though you do multiply
Start->Turn Off Computer...->Shutdown's and various other ways, including
shutdown from the Task Manager.

After it finally decided to shut down, it brought me to typical Saving Your
Settings... and Windows is Shutting Down... message screens, but it was
giving me a detailed list of what it was doing. Shutting down windows file
protection, file protection shut down successfully, and even a 'Playing
Logoff Sound..." message (it's nice to know that the computer just sits
there and does nothing while the sound is being played).

I also believe that it does the same thing during startup, but I'm not
exactly sure about this. Any idea what's going on?

Here is a link to an excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Most shutdown problems occur because the system is infested with
malware. Make sure you have a current version (not earlier than 2004)
antivirus installed using updated definitions. Do a scan with this in
Safe Mode. Also download and install Spybot Search & Destroy and
Ad-aware (you can get both from www.majorgeeks.com and they are free).
Update these programs and then scan in Safe Mode.
