Weird problem with mininized Windows

A friend has a weird problem when he minimizes an active window - it
disappears.

The taskbar is visible but it's empty apart from the two sets of icons at
either end.

The minimized program appears to be minimized since, although it can't be
seen, if he clicks on its name in Explorer it re-appears from the bottom of
the screen.

Weird. Any ideas?
