weird insertion point behavior

The insertion point in my Word docs has mysteriously changed from a vertical
bar to a flashing point. How can I change it back?

It is mind boggling how the same situation can happen to
(presumably) two different folks at the same time and
neither can give us a clue as to their operating system or
version of Word. See my response to "juttuniemi" above.
 
Try changing from your normal zoom to 500% and back to your normal zoom.
