Weird- Background images ONLY not displaying

What in the world would cause IE6 not to display
BACKGROUND images in tables and the body of a website?
Regular images will display fine though. CSS is not being
used for the backgrounds instance- though a linked
stylesheet is being used for other display purposes.
Anyone have a suggestion? Thank you in advance.

This is a client's browser and my thought is that she may
have downloaded an outside toolbar or something (similar
to EBAY's) that corrupted something within Explorer.
 
I would think that maybe the internet options had been
changed. Try there & make sure that the box that
says "show pictures" is checked. Or it may be under other
options there too.
Just a thought.
 
I appreciate your thought- this was the first place we
checked with no success.
 
Are the images .jpg or .png (or something else?) IE6 has
"issues" with some flavours of .png for example...
