One of the users on my domain is having a problem where
his students try to access his site, and at the main page
of the site, it asks for a username and password. Hitting
cancel fixes the problem, and you can browse to other
pages on the site, but every time you return to the main
page, it asks for the username and password. Any ideas on
how to get it to go away?

This could be a lot of things, but for starters, inspect
the URLs for all pictures, linked style sheets, and other
files that the page uses. One of these components may be
in a password-protected site.
