Web Query Stopped Working

J

John Wilson

I designed a workbook that extracted the winning numbers from QuickDraw from
a web page using a query.
I then had it do all sorts of nice things matching my favorite numbers,
showing what I would have won, lost, etc.

Problem is the web query stopped working last week???
Apparently they must have changed the formatting in the source code and the
query returns nothing.
I've been trying workarounds but to no avail.
I can open the web page in IE and then do a copy and paste but I can't get
the web page to open
within Excel. Workbooks.Open URL & OpenText both return an error.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The web page is:

Thanks,
John

This is some strange behavior! I tried it and couldn't get it working
either. You could copy/paste the data to Notepad (which removes all
web-formatting stuff) and then, from there, paste it in an Excel sheet.

Maybe they though people with powerful Excel Web Queries would win the
lottery too many times and put them out of business. :)

Don,

It is some strange behavior especially when it did work (for years) without
a glitch.
I never did save the source for the original page (before it stopped
working) but
to the untrained eye (mine) it didn't look any different than before (but
something
obviously changed).
Anyway.....
Tim Williams answered my question in another post in this NG "Extracting Web
Data"
and provided some really neat code to accomplish what I was trying to do.
Thread is here: http://tinyurl.com/62945q

I'll send you a copy of the completed wb (utilizing Tim's code) directly if
you
want to take a look at it.

Thanks,
John Wilson

Don,

I think (not sure) that the query does refresh but for some reason
(something embedded in the web page) it returns no data.
I do wish that I had saved a before and after copy of the source on that web
page to see what they did change.

Thanks,
John
