Web publishing

When I try to publish my html files to a web server using a certain IP
address, the Publish Web option is grayed out. Does anyone know how to
enable it? Thanks.

You need to create a Web (Site) first, sounds like you have created 'loose' pages.

Ok - you have to forgive me - I've created websites in html before by
uploading files to a web directory, and thought I could do the same with
Front Page. So, I've created a collection of html files but haven't actually
created the website yet. I looked in Front Page help in trying to create
the website, but when it asks for the URL, I put "http://(the ip
address)/index.htm" and then went to the Folder List, selected index.html and
then Preview in Browser. However, the page came up blank. I realize I did
something wrong - now it has index.htm/index.html. I appreciate your help.

You need to create the Web first (usually on your local machine)...then create other pages WITHIN the FP Web. FP needs to create other files to support the webpages that's why you need to create the Web first (yes it will be empty of any of YOUR content).

You 'typically' will be Publishing to http://yourweb.com/ (do not include the index page after the slash. Sometimes it will be http://www.yourweb.com/ .

FP will 'adjust' the index page to html OR htm depending on what your server requires...you can delete the extra one later OR find out from your host which extension you should use for the index page.

I don't know if I've gotten to a place where it can't be fixed. As I had
mentioned, I selected (the ip address)/index.htm for the URL when selecting a
new web, and then I was left with (the ip address)/index.htm/index.html. But
then, I deleted index.html. At this point, it wouldn't let me redo it, so I
didn't try changing it. So, you're saying I should store it locally, first.
Do you not do this by saying "New->Page or Web->Web Site Templates? What
should I put when it asks for a URL, then? When I tried to use the IP
address, it wouldn't accept it without something after the slash. (The IP
address isn't linked to the domain, yet.) Thanks again for your help.

You have to create a folder on your HD, then open the folder in FP, then the folder will become a
web, then you can import your pages and images, etc. into this folder. Thereafter you would always
open the web in FP and create your content. With images you would create them in a image
application, then import into FP before using.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT name the folder using your full domain name or IP address, i.e., mydomain.com or
123.123.123.123, instead just call it mydomain.

try using the *real* url, not the IP address.
