Web Browser Not Responding

Guest

I have a strange question. I recently purchased a DELL Latitude 800 PC with
Windows XP Pro. While snoopying around and getting the feel of the machine, I
went to microsoft.com because I wanted to download SP2. Well that site, and
as far as I can tell, only that site, as strange as it may seem, causes my
web browser to hang and it goes into a not responding state. This happens
EACH and EVERYTIME I go to microsoft.com!!!! No other site that I've visited
causes the browser to not respond. Any ideas? This is extremely frustrating.
Thanks in advance. Alan K-S.

Alan,

perhaps http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm can pinpoint this
problem. I can imagine several possible causes.

Never connect to the Internet without an active firewall. If you
have done that already, it may be the cause of your problem.

Either
1. change the Display Settings to "Normal Size (96 DPI)" from 120 DPI
OR
2. change the registry

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"UseHR"=dword:00000000

OR

3. just leave it as is & never bother with www.microsoft.com - (MY EVENTUAL
CHOICE, because o/w the fonts are too small)
or
4. change the registry when you ever need to go to www.microsoft.com

Maybe someday Microsoft & Dell & Web-Page Programmers will work out what to
do about this

You will find there are many pages that ramp up the CPU & make your fan turn
on - such as
http://www.itworldcanada.com/Pages/...5240-4b9e-976f-6cd067afef2b&News=Daily ITwire
and just about ANY page using that same background.
It seems it can even knock out my home router, so that I have to reset it.

Dell needs to work on their Video driver, I think.
But Web developers should stay away from that background.

I think I may have even found problems with Office Picture Manager if
too-complex images are in the My Pictures folder.

Dell Support should know this problem intimately.

Jim,

unrelated to the original problem, I was curious and tried the
page, though not on a Dell computer. No problems here
whatsoever.

What type of router do you use? I'd guess Linksys or SMC. A
router should absolutely never crash, unless it is a very cheap
one or the power goes off. If yours crashes then that is a
router defect. I'd try to update the firmware first. If that
doesn't help, I would get a decent router.

My recommendation would be one from the DrayTek Vigor line. I
use one and don't have any problems with it. Runs for months
without ever stopping. D-Link also has a reasonably good
reputation.

It is a DLink (DI 524) router that I have - may have just been a coincidence
that ONE time that it crashed on that page - for rendering problems should
not affect the router.

Jim,

well, if it crashed only one time and never again then it may
not be a real worry.

I would still keep the firmware up to date.

I don't have a Dell computer and cannot contribute to any
Dell-related problem solutions.
