web access vanishes

Gurus - on my win2K box, every so often I appear to lose my web
access. All other tcpip and internet services run fine
(popmail, nntp newsgroup readers, etc.). This tells me that
somehow port 80 is crashing. I can't even get to my router at
192.168.2.1; logout&on doesn't fix it, only a restart of the
machine. Firefox or IE, no matter. It doesn't happen every
time, on every session, only if I've been really heavy with the
surfing e.g. opening multiple links at once in firefox. Is
there any tool I can "kick" port 80 with?

What firewall software are you running? The "port" isn't the issue....

Can you ping www.google.com when you lose connectivity?
Can you telnet to www.google.com on port 80?

I'm suspecting that you can't, because if you can't even ping your default
gateway, something is amiss. You might want to try a winsock repair tool
(these are handy to keep around) and perhaps do some antispyware scans and
run a full scan with your AV software to see if you have any unwanted
critters.

Also - update your NIC driver from the manufacturer's website.

Haven't tried to ping. Good suggestion; thanks.

Oh? What are these? Have any freewware names I can search on?
This is win2K, not XP, though.

I have done this, both with spybot and adaware as well as
symantec virus checker. No hits.

It's the NIC built into the ASUS A7V8X mobo running to a SMC
Barricade 4 port wired router.

thanks again for the reply.

What's blocked outbound? I don't use this, so I don't know what to tell you
to check.

Also try the telnet.

Not a problem -

or google for 'winsockfix"

The latest versions of both Spybot and Adaware, right? You *just* downloaded
them and updated them? What about the MS antispyware beta - have you tried
that?

And did you get the latest driver from the manufacturer?
thanks again for the reply.

No problem - hope this is helpful.
