weak preformance

My computer after being on for half an hour or so begins
to get really slow. The hard drive light stays on for
minutes on end. Just doing simple tasks such as, opening
my computer, internet explorer or msn, take to long. When
I bring up windows task manager, the system idle process
is always using 85+ on the CPU. Do you know what this is?

The "system idle process" means your computer is doing nothing - it's
"idle."

Have you scanned your system for spyware/adware?
