we are not the only ones who think EssentialPIM is great

I tried out EP and was impressed with the overall appearance and the
obvious thought which went into the development of the program. Alas, I
could not use it as my everyday PIM because it lacks the following two
extremely useful features:

1. Live email links in Contacts. The email addresses entered into
Contacts *look* like live mailto links, and they *look* like you could
click on them to open a composition window in your default mail client
with the contact's name in the "To:" field, but when I click on them
nothing happens. Either it doesn't work that way, or I missed something
in the setup which activates this.

2. Drag and Drop an entry from Contacts into an appointment time slot in
the Calendar. This is possible with Palm Desktop (also free), and saves
a *tremendous* amount of typing.

Maybe these functions are available, but only in the pay version?

probably, but what really sold me is its portability. its smaller than
others mentioned in here (of course there is always sidekick), itd be
nice to find one that doubles as an app launcher.

Comments and questions:
I've been using ECCO for ten years (now abandonware from NetManage). It
was inexplicably abandoned at the Windows 95 stage, despite universal
rave reviews and a dedicated user base. I'm able to integrate it with my
pocket thing because ECCO is just barely able to synchronize with its
first-generation US Robotics Pilot integration. But ECCO is frozen in
time, and I doubt that I'll be able to synchronize it with, let's say, a
current or future Palm-softwared device. I want to move on. Essential
PIM, from your review link, seems to have been inspired by ECCO.

So, these questions:
- Does EPIM synchronize with palmtops, especially ones using the Palm OS?
- Does EPIM allow multi-level outlines, and allow them in all modes,
such as the address book. Does it allow adding outlined notes to
appointments?
- Does the limited field length in the free version's address book
impose a handicap?

Now, regarding app launcher:
ECCO can be set up to launch any program you'd like from its Tools
drop-down menu. ECCO is so complex that here's a function that I'd
overlooked, despite my having used this program for such a long time.
And I just did it. Thanks for the memory jog: IrfanView is now two
clicks inside my ECCO.

You can also embed a link to a document the same way. Thus, clicking on
the document link opens its associated program. If you want, you can add
an icon onto ECCO's toolbar for your launch.

This is way cool, don't you think?

I recall, too that this may be part of ECCO's "Shooter" function. The
Shooter is a module that was added to ECCO so that the user could cut
and paste between applications. But the following version of Windows
added the clipboard, which made ECCO's shooter moot.

I always forget how to link to the ECCO download. But whenever I bring
it up in this group, some other ECCO junkie jumps in and provides it.

You need to double-click them.

Richard,
have you been here:

Oh, yes. Today from the later thread.

But I wonder if you could please answer my questions about the
functionality of Essential -- I thought I'd ask you because I dind't see
this info on Essential's New Jersey site.

If if can obtain the same functionality that I've been getting from
ECCO, I might be interested in switching; even buying it (the paid
version is really affordable -- about 10% of what my ECCO had cost). My
reason is for onward compatibility with future palmtops. You see,
already, although it's been functioning perfectly, I'm aware that my
connection between ECCO IV and my Palm OS is a bit rickety. If I want to
get myself a more current Palm Pilot, I might very well enter the
territory of no-go. That's what concerns me about staying with ECCO. I
understand that ECCO works quite nicely under the latest Windows OS.

The synchronization built into the Palm OS still intrigues me -- it's
pretty uncanny. I realized that ECCO must have been substantially
re-engineered for this. It's one thing to have an appointment entered
into either device show up in the other. What really took brainpower was
designing the system so that _deletions_ worked so well. Think about
this for a moment...

Hello everyone!

Glad too see people actively using EssentialPIM and talking about it!

That has been replied already, double-click does do the trick.
2. Drag and Drop an entry from Contacts into an appointment time slot in
the Calendar. This is possible with Palm Desktop (also free), and saves
a *tremendous* amount of typing.

not possible currently neither in Free nor Pro.

I will watch this topic, so please do not hesitate to post questions in
the thread.

So, these questions:

Currently, no. Palm OS/Windows CE/Symbian devices are the target for
future versions.
- Does EPIM allow multi-level outlines, and allow them in all modes,
such as the address book. Does it allow adding outlined notes to

multi-level outlines possible in Notes and To-Do module.
- Does the limited field length in the free version's address book
impose a handicap?

Unless you use extremely long entries- that's not a problem. We have
not had complaints about it yet.
You can also embed a link to a document the same way. Thus, clicking on
the document link opens its associated program.

That's not an official feature in EssentialPIM, but there are users
doing that in Notes module. Just typing full path to the file.
EssentialPIM Pro also has "Attachment" feature for each item
(Note/Contact/To-Do), where you can store links to files and files
themselves!

EssentialPIM Pro Desktop trial is not limited in any way except 30-days
limit, so please feel free to try it. We also have got a very active
and populated forum at http://www.essentialpim.com/forum/ , where users
share ideas, suggestions and tricks.

The Ecco discussion group on yahoo has some noise about Netmanage
releasing the source code, with a team of programmers ready to bring it up
to date. It seems that it's only a matter of time until they do this.

Oh, yes. Today from the later thread.

In the spirit of the "free" theme here, compusol charges ten bucks to
participate in their forum. Yahoo charges nothing.

Aha! I thought they looked too much like links for this not to be
possible.

Hello I am just wondering. Is this freeware? I found a sight that says
EssentialPIM is shareware. Was there ever a freeware version of it? I am
looking for a better PIM than what I have. Any recomendations?

Thankyou,

well, since you're watching this topic (and i don't wanna register on
another forum site), is there a way to start EPIM minimized already in
the tray, and when i close by [X] on the title bar window, have it
minimize to try and when minimize is selected have it minimize to task
bar?

well, heck, to top it off, while you're at it, add a usb smart (drive
letter smart) app launcher. :-)

other than these 3 annoyances, EPIM is perfect. :-)

It would be even more perfect if you removed the annoying little advert
for the Pro version. I stopped using EPIM because of that.

Everything you mentioned is possible, except in this setup EPIM will
minimize to system tray on Minimize.

Max, I encounter a bad printout on the monthly calendar (whether
portrait or landscape). It truncates Fridays. See the same relative
result on printing weekly. What am I missing?
