Ohh party time whoopee Morning all, umbrellas out and doggy walking in the beautiful Kent countryside and come back covered in mud, soaked through and that is just me and dogs need a bath

Oh he is settling very well thanks TC. He and our existing dog Taz have become firm friends and now Max is walking with confidence on an extendable lead along the country footpaths and fields, and getting less nervous by the day, and is a very loving little dog.

That is wonderful to hear Bootneck. So glad he has settled so well and that he and Taz have become such good buddies. Two lucky lads to have found such a happy, loving home with you and Mrs Bootneck.

Thanks TC, I cannot understand why people mistreat animals it makes me so angry. The day we went to the Last Chance Animal Sanctuary at Edenbridge we went to see a bitch colley which was advertised as friendly with other dogs, when we got there and talking to the manager he told that the bitch had just torn into an boy dog and that to be separated so was no longer being as OK with other dogs. I said as we are here we could have a look around and saw Max ( then called Bumper as he bumped into everything) they had received him that week from Cardiff or Swansea and he was blind. We fell in love although we looked at all the other dogs he had wedeled into our hearts suckers that we are. Sarah has a lot of experience with collies as she used to do agility with her dogs and used to train members of Southern Border Collie Club for agillity and I think he was impressed with her knowledge. Any way he after talking to us he waved the usual adoption procedure and allowed us to take him home that day. We had to take him back to have him nurtured as he was complete. He when first had him would go to ground as submissive action when one got any near him so we surmise he had been badly treated but now still any sudden noise he will jump and then go to ground but he is much better now and is much more trusting and comes when called and loves attention from humans he knows, no aggression in him at all I think it had been beaten out of him, as I write he is lying beside me fast asleep, bless him. It is lovely that I am now able to take him out for walks now not on a short lead and let him have some freedom with a extendable lead and he will come back to me when called. Also when we first had him we had a lot of mishaps of soiling in the house but after the first three days he now goes out into the garden and has mastered the dog flap in the backdoor so now we are so pleased we made the decision to have him.

I totally agree with you Bootneck. Undoubtedly, there are some humans who should never, ever, be allowed near any animal, let alone to own one.

Poor Max, it sounds like his start in life was spirit-breaking. Is his blindness the result of ill-treatment, do you think? It must be so rewarding for you both to watch him gain confidence and learn new things. Finding and using the dog-flap, for example, can't be very easy when you can't see it. You are helping him regain his dignity (and his own natural intelligence is obviously playing a part too.)

We had a border collie whom we adopted from the dog shelter in Cardiff. This was way back in 1972, but he was with us until the 1990s, having lived to the ripe old age of 19 years. He really was "family" and there wasn't an ounce of malice in him... even when we were adopted by a couple of stray felines, who decided to share our home too. He was very tolerant and good-natured.
