Excuse my ignorance, but what does WCG stand for?

Now that I've had a look in more detail at what PC Review does I am even more interested.Any form of medical research is a wonderful idea and all these volunteers in PCR are doing a great job.

I have a particular interest in medical matters and am intrigued by the mechanics of your operation.Initially I got the impression that members simply provided their computer and left all the crunching to go on in the background but there must be more to it than that. How, for instance, do you accumulate "points" and how on earth do you get a "result"? Also how do you get a "credit" and what is a "RAC" (nothing to do with cars I assume).

Please let me know so that I can think up some more questions.

Thanks, we appreciate the comment. :)

Nope, that is, in a nutshell, all we do.

It is all handled by the WCG software, we simply "crunch" a work-unit sent to our PC, when finished the program sends in the result back & we get 'credit' for the work. :thumb:

Will that do for starters ? :D

Thanks for the reply. That's great for starters. But what about points, and are they accumulated as individuals or as a group - presumably lots of computers are working on the same problem at the same time.

I also noted your comments on burning out the CPU. Is this a major problem? It could be quite expensive to replace. Also, with the crunching going on in the background, does it slow down the computer?

Ooops, your post earlier appears to have slipped our notice - sorry

Ok, points are accumulated as individuals, and if you are a member of a team they are counted there too.

As regards 'burning out' a CPU - I have never seen it and I have crunched 24/7 for several years - you just need to make sure you have adequate cooling in the case and CPU as you should be doing anyway.
There is now a throttle control you can use for the various clients to limit the amount of CPU usage if you want to make sure.

All these activities are set at 'low priority' so when you need to use your computer the other tasks, they take priority and the crunching only starts again when your PC is idle - it just uses the spare CPU cycles your computer is not using at the time.

Nothing to do with crunching - is your sig to do with that computer that worked on the Enigma code in the war?

Yes. Iwent to see it at Bletchly Park and it's fascinating. Takes up a whole room and has less computing power than a calculator but at least it was the FIRST programmable computer (despite what the Americans say).

My own system is so old that I thought it was the nearest I could get.
