As i'm a newbie to this crunching thing I might from time to time ask daft questionss..So I'm going to fire away with the first one..Set a spare laptop up on wednesday with WCG and have left it running since..Question is, when do I start building points...???I know it might sound dumb, but like I said, me is a newbie to it all..

Nope not dumb at all.
It usually depends on Validation.

Open BOINC > Projects>Results sign in and check them.

Don't worry mxg - all will be revealed.

When you are crunching a task there will be two or three other crunchers on the SAME task. The three to four results then have to be checked to see that they all agree and only then can validation be given.

You may be the first (of the three or four crunchers) to finish the task, in which case you may have to wait a few days till the other crunchers on your task finish the work. Validation can therefore be several days after you have finished. Alternatively, you may be the last of the crunchers on your task to finish and in this case validation may occur within several hours.

I'm sure we all went through the same scenario when we started crunching, I certainly did, but the points will soon start to accumulate. Just keep on crunching.

Madxgraphics, look at it this way you have the credits (WCG units crunched) & your account is updated in a few days time, you will soon shoot up the rankings!

I had 2 WCG units recently that took 7 days before being validated!

Thanks Wiz..Good thing I bought a cooling fan for my laptop to sit on last week, did notice it got rather warmer than normal..Ah well if she blows it was for a good cause..Right time to get reading through that thread..

I'm sure it will be, its been through the wars already and always come out shining....And as its an Acer i'm pretty handy in the shed when it comes to repairing them..Sort of have to be, or i'd be pretty crap at my job..

Welcome to the crunching ..just keep check for a few days with the Laptop, elevation and good air flow will help greatly, i crunched with a IBM Thinkpad T23 and it got very hot so stuck it on top of a next directory..sorted
