Why are steering wheels on motor boats normally on the right-hand side of the boat?
The “rules of the nautical road” require power boats to yield to other vessels approaching from their right. In order to give the skipper of such a boat a clear view in this direction, steering wheels are traditionally placed on the right-hand side of the boat.

Why do we in the UK, the old Empire countries, Japan and a few others drive on the "correct" side of the road and cars, therefore, have steering wheels on the right ?

It goes back to the days of riding horses and right- handedness. In towns and cities you kept your horse up against the left hand walls so that you could fight off attackers with your sword in your right hand. If you were up against the right hand wall you would have to have your sword arm across your body which would be very awkward. So, all traffic kept to the left. Too bad if you were left handed, about 10% or so, the majority ruled.

I tell this to all Americans I meet. They find it fascinating to discover that they drive on the "wrong" side.
