WATCH OUT USING TIGERDIRECT REBATES

J

Jethro

I had a bad experience yesterday. I had ordered a MOBO with a
manufacturer's $25 rebate, received it fine, but when I tried to work
the 'rebate' scenario, I discovered:

1) They now use 'instant rebate' with www.onrebate.com
2) Onrebate gets you to enter all the usual stuff, after which it
provides a form for you to print to then snail-mail.
3) Onrebate charged me $2.50 as a 'processing fee'.
4) TigerDirect says they have no control over those rebates and their
processings.
5) Onrebate put me on hold, never answering my 3 calls.

Great googaboogas.

Jethro... and doesn't logic tell you that there is a scam component to
mail in rebates?

My old granny used to say 'don't allow anyone to have charge of your
money'. True over 60 years ago when I first heard her say it and just
as true today.
It's a marketing ploy that firstly depends on over 50% of people NEVER
send in their rebate coupons/applications, and after that they make it
hard for people to claim.
I make it a practice to not deal with any retailer that make heavy use
of rebates, even for items no being sold with a rebate.
Regards

Lee - I agree with your viewpoint. On the other hand, I have had
little trouble in the past with Tiger's rebates. I just always
persisted when I encountered any problems. But it does look like
things have changed. I can now be known as an 'ex' Tiger customer.
Sad thing is - they won't miss me. The customer base is that big.

That astounds me. Everyone that I know that has used Tiger Direct has
had a negative experience, at least in part. Even those that have
gotten the correct products in working order, have eventually received
their rebates, and have not been double charged, will comment that
customer support attitude is akin to "go away boy, you bother me."

A couple of years ago a friend was considering buying from them. Having
had a bad experience with them myself, I sought to warn him. We found a
site, not unlike resellerratings.com, that posted user reviews of a
company's performance. When I called Tiger Direct to asky why they had
so much negative feedback, unanswered, they hung up on me. My friend
got the message with clarity.

I know it's only five reviews, but still, a zero at reseller ratings is
pretty impressive:

They don't just "use them", it's the same parent company.

How did you choose to be paid? IIRC, there's a fee for
Paypal, and would probably be one for any other (new)
method.
4) TigerDirect says they have no control over those rebates and their

Tiger Direct is a bunch of slimeballs that have been
involved in shady practices for years... which is why most
seasoned bargain hunters won't touch them with a 10 foot
pole.

Great googaboogas.

If you're lucky, it wasn't a lot you lost (only the $2.50?)
and you have learned to avoid them. Some people spend
months and lose far more.

Some people may remark about all rebates being a gamble, but
it's far worse with Tiger Direct, from their questionably
fradulent telephone billing scam to their bait-n-switch to
their misleading product specs, their hidden rebate
affiliations, and even selling the rebate participants data
online to anybody who pays a small fee.

Many will be glad to see them go out of business.

I avoid buying products with rebates...
and Tiger certainly has one of the more difficult rebate programs...
however the last few times I bought from them...
I did end up getting the rebate...
so I would not call it a scam
