Warning from the Canon CanoScan Lide 100 manual

This statement appears in the manual:

"When using the NTFS file system, the TWAIN data source may not be
invoked. This is because the TWAIN module cannot be written to the winnt
directory for security reasons. Contact the computer's administrator for
help."

I'm not sure of the significance of this. The scanner is supposed to
work okay with W2000, which is the OS I still use. Both hard drives are
formatted with the NTFS file system.

Is it just saying that I can't save anything in the winnt
folder/directory, but saving to any other folder is okay, even on NTFS
drives?

My guess is that the actual user running the TWAIN data source must
be in the Administrator group to be able to write to the winnt directory.
(hence the advice to contact the computer's admin).

But then again, I could be completely wrong since I am not
that intimately involved with the various Windows versions
on a daily basis. :-)

I wonder how many people would actually try saving something to the
winnt directory - a system directory - rather than to My Documents or a
similar directory.

Maybe it's saving the scan settings to the winnt directory and not the
actual scan image files.

Thanks for raising this good point. I have one on order, so after
hooking it up I'll watch for where the setting file is stored. But it
seems that knowing that writing to winnt directory could cause problems,
Canon would have chosen any of many benign places to save the setting files.
