warning appears when starting program

When I attempt to start a program from my desktop I get
the following message:

Some files can harm your computer. If the file
information below looks suspicious, or you do not fully
trust the source, do not open or save this file.

File name: xxxxx.exe (my xxx's)
File type: Application
From: H:\xxx\xxx

This type of file could harm your computer if it contains
malicious code.

Would you like to open the file or save it to your
computer?

Open Cancel More Info are the only choices.

Always ask before opening this type of file is checked
and greyed out making it unavailable to change the
selection.

How do I clear the check box? I have looked for file
associations for .EXE files and none are available in the
folder options/file types selections. This is annoying
since I use several programs from the network that
display an identical dialog box before allowing me to
open the program. This is commercial accounting software
and their tech support people have been no help. Others
on the networ do not experience this problem and they
have identical systems to mine. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance,
Mike Hubler

From your description it sounds like you have a shortcut on your
desktop that points to the exe file on the network, right? So each
time you click the shortcut, Windows asks what you want to do with it
(i.e., that open or save dialog box).

If you installed the application on your PC, and then started the app
and used it to access the accounting database stored on the network
(or whatever file type the prog uses to store manipulate data), then
I'd think that the warning would not appear.

No?

Just a thought as I'm definitely not familiar with the unnamed
application that you're talking about.

Don't know if that is correct or not. The application is
designed to run only from the network from what I can
determine from the documentation.

The fact that the check box for "Always ask brefore
opening this type of file" is not selectable is my
problem and I wish to correct this and not work around
the problem.

Identical computers on the same network with identical
user rights (even logged in as the same user) do not
experience this issue.

thanks again,

experience this issue.

The I'd guess that if everything is identical on these other machines,
there must be a way to turn off that dialog box. I've never looked,
but imagine there's a setting somewhere.
