Warning about UltimateZip

Here is a warning about the program called UltimateZip, UltimateZip
3.0 Beta 2 is not freeware, it is nagware. You can download & use it
for personal use but you will keep getting nag screens asking you to
register the prog. To get rid of the nags, you have to pay for the
prog.

UltimateZip 2.7.1 is the freeware version of UltimateZip. UltimateZip
2.7.1 doesn't contain no nag screens. You can download UltimateZip
2.7.1 from http://www.ultimatezip.com/download.htm .

IOW - you don't *agree* with the general consensus. :)

b 2.7.1 is Adware -> splash screen that advertises another company's
product.

see: http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/WareGlossary.php

YMMV ;)

Susan

I don't believe that 2.7.1 is adware. The splash screen is the screen
of the company who sponsored Ultimatezip but it's not forcing you to
purchase anything.

UltimateZip became shareware/nagware because he was not able to keep
Ultimatezip freeware. UltimateZip used to be freeware because the
author made money from his sponsors.

If 2.7.1 'doesn't contain no nag screens' either why is it a better option?

Because it is freeware, there are no nag screens asking us to pay for
the program. The newer version of UltimateZip isn't freeware because
you have to pay to get rid of the nag screens & these nag screens are
there to make you pay for the program.

Here at ACF, we frown on this kind of practice.

I must disagree. If it asks or tries to force you to purchase it, it's
nagware. If it has advertising, it is adware - go to the link supplied
by Susan and read the definition. I have 2.7.1 on my computer (I don't
really know why, it's a resource hog and I don't use it any more!) and
IMHO it IS adware - at startup it pops up a splash screen advertising its
sponsor, and there's no option within the program to remove it. You are
stuck with this advertising, unless you do what I did (cheat!) and use
Resource Hacker to reduce the time the splash screen is displayed ;)

Ha! Where's this held? (I must admit I haven't looked properly myself)

Sorry, I didn't really understand the question, but if you're asking how
to reduce the splash screen time in resource hacker, just open uzip.exe
with it and do a search for "splash". Two instances are found, go to the
bottom of the page of the second one and you'll see "Interval = 5000" (or
it might be 3000, I can't recall) - this is in milliseconds, so I've
changed mine to 100 and now if I blink I miss it :)

I didn't phrase the question very well did I ... but yes, that's exactly
what I was looking to discover.

Thanks v. much!

Oooh, noted and saved - thanks.
==================================

It's so good that it killed itself when I went to the URL.

At least I got a complete black screen.
