Norton AV on 1 of my computers warned that a backdoor.trojen,
infecting waol.exe, was present in the WINNT directory, but it
couldn't repair, remove or quaranteen it. I booted to DOS and deleted
the file.

What does Waol.exe do?

Run a google search of "waol.exe trojan". There's more than one. If
you add "backdoor" to the list of words to search for, it narrows it
down to some keyloggers, that are used to steal the password for your
aol account.
