Wanted: Decent RAR/ZIP client

David Baxter

As header.

I quite like WinRAR, except it's not free... and if I can get something
equivalent for free, then that's a good thing.

Must have good context menus, support encryption and SFXs, and have a wide
range of formats (take a look at FilZIP for its list of supported formats).

Recommendations please?

Cheers,
Dave

I like DCA. Although it's not going to make coffee for you, it does have
quite a few features for a freeware archiver. I believe it's finished
archives are quite comparable with RAR's. DCA also makes SFX files.

It's not really compatible with anything else though so you either need a
copy of DCA to unarchive or turn your archives into *.EXE's using the SFX
option.

Try ICEOWS at http://www.iceows.com/
It's smaller then many pack progs, but it's full featured.

WinRAR is my favorite by a wide margin. IZArc is my favorite WinRAR clone by
a good margin.

You already have many recommendations. I stuck with PowerArchiver
after archiving the last freeware version. I think there is a rar (or
unrar) .dll that you can find elsewhere to update. It works perfectly
under 98Se, Me and XP Pro.

FilZIP:

support for .ace, .arc. arj, .cab, .gz, .lha, .jar, .rar, .tar and of
course .zip

PowerArchiver:

full built-in support for ZIP, CAB, LHA(LZH), TAR(+TAR.GZ, +TAR.BZ2)
and BH (BlakHole) archives.

* built-in support for reading and extracting: RAR, ARJ, ARC, ACE,
ZOO, GZIP and BZIP2 archives.

* full built-in support for XXE and UUE Internet encoded files.

It doesn't create .rar files, but I prefer .zip, so that hasn't been a
problem for me.

It's ~2 megs, a bit larger than some, but it works great.

WinRAR is a proprietary compression algorithm so you won't find anything
free that will compress to RAR. There are many freeware archiving programs
that will decompress RAR files. I've pretty much tried all of the freebies
and settled on IZArc http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/. IZArc can compress in 7Zip
which is even tighter than RAR. Try it, you'll like it.

Zip Genius. Excellent tool. Dead easy to use, and adds right click menu
items (extract, extract to etc.
I've got 2 versions, ones 1.something, the other's 5.something. And
although I get fatal exception errors sometimes, this is only to do with
what I don't have on my pc, it's never failed to perform (even after
spitting the dummy), has quickie, thickie and tricky user interfaces and
is more flexible than Cow & Chicken's uncle.....

I think this is just a self extracting zip (the last link) that you
provide the path to PowerArchiver to. I just ran it and it looks like
it extracted the dll files to my directory. It comes up with a default
path:

"C:\Program Files\PowerArchiver"

This might not be where your program is though. Mine is on "F:".

You can navigate your drives and directories with the setup program.
Just select the main directory for PA.

Ultimatezip 2.7 beta 3. Last (AFAIK) freeware version. Looks and acts
just like Winzip and handles every compression format I have tried. I
have been using it since it came out (oct 2003?) and love it. If anyone
wants it, I can post it on my site.
