i have a set of quotes i found online and pasted them into a word document. I
now want to set the set of quotes as the wallpaper or background of my
desktop- but i cant find intructions for this in help. it seems a simple
enough thing to want to do but it is. help!

You could try exporting the document to a jpeg then go into your display
settings and open it into the desktop:

Control Panel > Display > Desktop

Thanks for replying- have no idea howto export docs into jpeg version etc-
this is the first time have wanted to do this- maybe you could explain this
too...?

There are a couple ways. Easiest is to format the text as you want it to
show on the desktop, then copy it.
Open Paint
Image->Attributes dialog. Set width and height to 1.
Edit->Paste (canvas should expand to fit your text)
File->Save As, choose the jpg format
Exit Paint and use the system display options to set your new jpg to your
Windows desktop background.
