Want to delete old entries in My Recent Documents

I have Windows XP Home, bought in 2002 (HP Pavilion). I've never deleted
anything listed in My Recent Documents, because I didn't want to affect any
linked files.

But the list is very long...is it safe to delete anything in this category?
Will any of my files be affected if I do so? Thanks.
