If I launch Notepad and do File -> Open, the directory contents are
presented in the List format view by default. Every time I have to go to
the View Menu icon and choose Details. This type of behavior happens with
other programs too.

Is there a utility (or register tweak) that would allow me to set the deault
view to Details -- for all programs? (PS: I have figured out how to do
that with Windows Explorer, but that does not affect other software...)

Thanks..

Try this:

1) Launch your Windows Explorer and set the view to Detail from the icon located
last at the top. you will know there is a drop down arrow beside it.

2) Now click on Tools, Folder options, View [now this a tab]

3) Now click on a button which states "Apply to all folders"

4) Click OK

Now try launching your application and see if it is fixed.

Hi, Kevin.

Yes, I have already done that in Windows Explorer (see second paragraph of
my post), but unfortunately that does not seem to affect all the programs...
For instance, when I launch Start -> Run -> Browse, the Browse window still
shows the contents of the subdirectory in a List view instead of a Details
view.

You need to click on Start > Control Panel > Folder Options.

Click on the 'File Types' tab. Under Registered file types: click on
the header bar at the top of the windows to sort the list
alphabetically.

Scroll down the list to "Folder". . . . NOT File Folder!!! "Folder"

Click it once to highlight it, the click the 'Advanced' button located
toward the bottom. In the windows that opens, maker sure that
'explore' is highlighted int he Actions windows and then select "Set
Default'

Then just OK your way out there and you should be good to go.

Hi. Did as you instructed but have not noticed any changes with my
problem...
For instance, when I click on Start -> Run -> Browse, I still see multiple
columns of folders (if the leftmost column in the Browse window runs out of
display space). What I was hoping to achieve is the Browse window (or, with
other applications, the Open window) to show only one vertical column of
folders (left side) and a scroll bar (right margin of the window).

Exactly what I needed!. Thanks!!

This is the only free program to modify the Open/Save
Dialog window. (And the only one to do it correctly)

"FileOpenPatcher enlarges the Windows Open File dialog and
sets Details view as default."
