where do I buy a valid win xp product key? I installed xp sp1 and now I got
error message " invalid product key" every time I log on. I bought this used
laptop on ebay and I don't have any documnentaion. I guess I am stuck now. I
am willing to pay for a good product key that make this error message go
away. Any ideas? Thanks.

Simply purchase a retail version of Windows XP Pro. You need XP Pro because
the pirated versions are XP Pro and you can't use XP Home to swap Licenses.
Once you have purchased the product you will have a legit Product Key. Now
download this little app http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/keyfinder.exe and
run it. You will see your illegal Product Key displayed. Go to
Options->Change Key and enter the legitimate 25 digit key. Reboot.

Another option is to purchase XP Home and do a clean install as XP Home
can't be run overtop of XP Pro.

You may be stuck with the computer, but it's likely that the person who sold
it to you is repeating the scam on Ebay on a regular basis. If you have not
done so, report them so they cannot use Ebay to further their ripoff scheme.

Greetings --

Are you trying to install Service Pack 1 and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and use a legitimate full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to eBay and the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've
been defrauded.

Hi Bruce,

unfortunately eBay does not care. Partial quote of an email I got from them,
when I tried to report a fraud case:

"Part of this information is contained in our User Agreement, under
article 3. I have included a portion of that Article below for your
review: "

" ......... We are not involved in the actual transaction between buyers and
sellers. As a
result, we have no control over the quality, safety or legality of the items
advertised, the truth or accuracy of the listings, the ability of sellers to
sell items or the ability of buyers to buy items."

Greetings --

I'm not surprised. That's one of the reasons I avoid on-line
auctions sites; as long as they get their cut, they don't really care
who gets burnt.

It's vital to report fraud to Ebay, so the seller can be banned from the
site.
Whether you are victim #1 or #100, report your fraud experience. This is the
only thing you can do to keep Ebay "clean."

I assume you did file a negative feedback report against the seller,
with the word fraud prominently included in the comments?

I would also report this incident to the Better Business Bureau or any
other consumer protection agency you can find in the seller's home
town or near vicinity.
