W32 Blast Worm Virus - "NTLDR Is Missing" Error Message

My son applied the MS patch to his XP PC and on the
reboot, now gets "NTLDR Is Missing" Error Message and
obviously, his PC will not boot. Anyone else suffering
from a similar problem after installing Mictosoft's patch?
 
Was his machine ever infected?

It was not. He checked it with Symantec's detection tool
before applying the patch, and it showed clean.
 
Perhaps he left the floppy in the drive when he rebooted.
