w2k to win98 through vpn

can a w2k machine speak to a win98 machine via vpn? on my
w2k i get as far as my vpn router but cannot speak to the
machine on the other side which is my win98 (that sits
behind my linksys vpn router).

i configured my w2k machines secpol.msc according to
microsoft support site but i couldn't find any
documentation on setting up win98 policies. do i even
have to?

any advice would be so GREATLY appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Win98 does not support IPSec. If the VPN router is the end point for the
IPSec connection, your problem may simply be a gateway or static route
issue. In any case I recommend you use PPTP to communicate with a Win98
machine.

the win98 machine so that i can connect to it? how would
i know when i actually connected to it.

If your router is simply mapping the the PPTP traffic to the Win98 machine,
then yes. You have to create an incoming connection on the Win98 machine.
Use Dialup Networking - Add New Connection wizzard.

BTW - I was half wrong about Win98 - there is a download available which
allows Win98 to be an L2TP/IPSec client - but not a server:

Oops - I guess it's been too long since I used Win98 - You cannot create an
incoming VPN (server) connection in Win98 - Sorry.

workstations?

i really appreciate your help!

just so you have a better understanding. the win98
machines are behind the vpn router. i am trying to access
them with my w2k pc. do i need to apply that update to my
win98 workstations so that i can communicate with them
when i dial in?

thanks again.

You should not have to do anything to the Win98 machine. However, success
depends on the capabilities of the router. If the router acts as a VPN
server and accepts incoming connections, then you should be able to route
packets to any machine on the network it serves. This should be
distinguished from a router which simply allows VPN packets to be passed on
to an internal VPN server - that kind of router will not work for you in
this scenario.

Assuming you are successfully connecting to a VPN/Server router, the problem
may simply be a need for a static route. On your Win2k machine, try:

route -p add <IP network of Win98 machine - eg. 192.168.0.0> MASK <eg.
255.255.255.0> <public IP address of VPN router>.

This should allow you to ping the Win98 machine by IP address and connect
with \\<Win98IPaddress>. Connecting by name and browsing may not work, but
this does not mean that the VPN is not working. Also, you will have
problems if the Win2k machine's IP address and the Win98's IP address have
the same network address - you will have to change one of them.

Sorry about the prior misinformation - I had just answered a similar
question about Win2k and failed to shift gears to talk about Win98.

Good Luck,
