W2K Question: PC has good DHCP info but DNS doesn't work. Ping does.

Al Dykes

How do I troubleshoot this.

One w2k machine on a small LAN can't resolve DNS names. I can ping
anything, including the addresses of the DNS servers by number.

This is a simple home LAN. The DNS serevers are part of the ISP.

All our machines are getting the same DHCP info.

Any suggestions ?

Al,

DNS resolution is affected by the LSP / Winsock subsystem.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

And Al, posting your email address openly will get you more unwanted email, than
wanted email. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a
bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - read this article.
