I have a 1.2 gHz Gateway machine running W2K Pro. When I
first started running the machine, it FLEW through
applications and multi-tasking. Now, all my programs seem
to take FOREVER to load. I am running AdAware and Virus
protection. I keep my temp internet files and cookies
empty.

What is the secret to keeping it running great?...I am
sure there is a build up of SOMETHING that I need to clean
out, but I don't know what it is. ANy help is appreciated.

1. Defrag your hard drive(s).

2. Check for and uninstall any third-party software, hardware
or drivers you're no longer using.

3. Reapply the latest service pack for Win2K.

4. If all else fails, just for a test try uninstalling your virus
protection software. If your system returns to its former
speed then find a different antivirus package, or at least
check for updates with your current software.

Well, I defrag regularly. I am running the latest SP
from Microsoft. I suppose it could be the VirusScan
software. However, after a previous virus infection that
forced reinstall of OS, I will deal with the speed issues
rather than not having protection. As for drivers, I'm
not sure which one are needed and which ones are old and
unused.

Thanks for the response.

I have the same problem and have done all you suggest
except uninstall McAfee. In addition I get a message that
I have run out of memory every so often, plus winupd.exe
and svchost.exe cause problems. Rebooting helps but is a
pain in the butt. And when I shut down there is an error
message but it goes by so quickly I can't read it.
