W2K Pro looking for domain when none

Suddenly my system will not allow any valid login because
it is looking for a domain on startup. There is no domain
and never has been one. How/what file can I
correct/replace if I make the drive a secondary drive in a
different computer. No recovery disk but all factory
disks. Many apps and data, do not want to reload over 200
gig of stuff.

Thanks In Advance

assuming you have win xp pro or win 2000, try starting up in safe mode and
log in as administrator. then open the system properties and go to computer
name tab. then change the log in to workgroup.

good luck

Even access to safe mode comes back to "The system can not
log you on now because the domain xxx is not available".
There is no message number or any other message.
I can boot the setup disks and do Repair, Console to get a
shell prompt, or attach the drive to a second computer to
access it as D: drive. I have done both and all files and
data are present but on any boot attempt it will not allow
access. The os is Win 2000 Pro, Service Pack 4
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Did you try the obvious of logging in as MACHINENAME\Administrator where
MACHINENAME is the name of the computer.
