W2K authority dns for more than one domain

H

Hasan Kachal

I have a bit of a problem:

I have two DNS servers ns1.xyz.com and ns2.xyz.com
I also have 8 static IP addresses.

Everything works with the above. I am now wanting my dns server to by the
authority for another domain name. I created a second zone, but it will not
allow me to create the reverse dns, saying it already exists, and is tied to
the first domain.

All I want is to be the authority for multiple domain names and host their
sites. Is there another way around this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you saying you want xyz.domain1.com, for example, to be the SOA of the
2.2.10.in-addr.arpa Reverse zone, for example? But currently, the SOA is
abc.domain2.org? You want to know if you can magically make both servers to
be the SOA. As part of the magic, you don't want this to be obvious to your
customers. If my guesses are correct, then I have 2 magic words for you - no
way. Just as you can't have 2 kings rule over a dominion, an SOA is not a
shared title. Besides, why is it a big deal who is the SOA? What problem are
you trying to fix by doing this?

OR

Are you just not sure that you could create PTR for multiple Forward Lookup
Zones using one Reverse Lookup Zone, regardless of who the SOA happens to
be? You can still create PTR (reverse records) in 192.168.100.x for
blah.domain1.com, whatever.domain2.org, and something.somewhere.blah. The
Reverse zone is not "tied", so to speak.

Sorry if I misunderstood your question.

I am basically my own ISP. I host my own domains, and want my existing
DNS's to be the Name Servers for any additional domains I host.

It looks like, I will have to create a new zone for every domain I purchase?
Which is fine, but I cannot created a new reverse zone? that is my question
I guess.

Thanks,

You can create as many reverse zones as you want. The problem is that each
one has to be unique.

For the reverse zone, that is IP based. YOu will need to talk to your ISP
about that since the IP block is registered to them.

Goto www.arin.net to lookup IP blocks.
